Dena M. Peterson, CYT 200
I began my personal yoga and meditation practice to combat chronic pain. Then deepened my practice by incorporating Ayurvedic practices, Reiki & Chakra healing principles. This exploration led me to complete yoga teacher training and become a Reiki II practitioner.
I experienced spinal fusion surgery from C5-L4 at the age of thirteen due to scoliosis and a chronic pain and fatigue, diagnosis at twenty-three. In 2018 I experienced a devastating injury to my left knee. The combination of all three resulted in a permanent invisible disability. This disability includes a spinal fusion, limited mobility, functional leg length discrepancy along with osteoarthritis in both hips, knees, neck, and shoulders.
What a blessing that this accident took place while I was completing my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training. That put me in the perfect position to start adapting my personal yoga practice.
These adaptions started while I was still laying in a hospital bed. Yes, we can do yoga even while laying in bed! Beginning with breathing consciously & activating my subtle body, I was then able to reach my hands over my head, and was eventually able to include small pelvic tilts too. This continued evolving & growing to a fulfilling chair practice.
The relief from muscle spasms, tension, weakness, pain, mental & physical stress that I experienced from my chair yoga practice is incomparable to any other healing modality I have experienced. It brings peace, love, and an improved quality of life. I have been called to share this beautiful practice with anyone interested.
I studied at Full Circle Yoga and Healing Arts in Yorba Linda California with Kristen Fewel & Janet Riley. It is there that I completed my 200 hour Hatha Vinyasa Yoga, and Meditation certification in April 2019. I received my Reiki II attunement from Christine Fogerty, of Freedom Wellness in Orange, California February 2020. In March 2023 I studied with Rodrigo Souza of Allihopa Yoga in Brazil, completing a comprehensive course titled Teaching Yoga to Folks with Disabilities.
I have facilitated Chair Yoga in retirement & communities centers, parks, private yoga studios, as well as virtual classes & events. Guiding a range of abilities even leading a class with some students in a shallow pool while others were in chairs on the pool deck. These types of classes are so fun & such a creative way to cater to differing preferences & abilities.
I’m extremely grateful to be the current Wellness Coach for the TRIO Program at Santiago Canyon College. The TRIO Program serves students from underrepresented populations such as those who are first generation college students, disabled, &/or financially limited. This program & ones like it are what made it possible for me to receive an AA degree from Santiago Canyon College. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreational Therapy attending Cal State Long Beach University full time.
My passion is making yoga & mindfulness accessible physically, financially, & culturally!
My biggest joy is being a single mother to an amazing teenage son. I enjoy yoga, of course, strength training, being in nature, music, art, and loving, enriching connections to family, friends, & community.
